Popeye's Chicken opened in the year 1972 when a quick service chicken restaurant which he named"Chicken on the Run" Was opened by Al Copeland in the modest suburb of Arabi outside New Orleans. Initially sales were slow and it took Copeland serving a spicier chicken recipe to the people of New Orleans when business started to pick up. Not long after Copeland reopened his restaurant with a name "Popeye's" that he named after Popeye Doyle, the character from the movie the French connection.

By 1985 Popeye's had opened its 500th location which put it on the same level with its national competitors. By 1996 Popeye's had opened 1000 restaurants and was named the best fried chicken in several cities in the South such as Atlanta, New Orleans and Dallas. As they approached their 35th year anniversary Popeye's chicken continues to look ahead into the future committed to creating brand-new products while maintaining their original recipes to provide their customers with a myriad of options.
