In 1965 Fred DeLuca was in search of an effective way to help pay for the education he needed to become a medical doctor. A family associate, Dr. Peter Buck, suggested that he start a sub sandwich shop and along with a One Thousand dollar loan Dr. Bock offered to become Fred's partner. This was the beginning of a business relationship that would forever change the fast food sandwich shop landscape. The first location opened in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut and had a humble goal of opening 32 new locations in 10 years. It didn't take long for Fred to learn what it takes to run a business and the importance of serving their customers a high quality, well made sub sandwich. He already understood that providing top-notch customer service to was important but also learned that by keeping the operating costs as low as possible without sacrificing quality was important to maintaining a profitable business. This combined with finding great locations for new restaurants were lessons that would serve as the baseline for the success that Subway restaurants would have around the world in decades to come.

Falling just short of their 32 new stores opened in 10 years the co-owners began franchising new subway locations which launched the subway brand into an explosion of growth that continues even today. And under 50 years the subway brand has grown into the worlds largest sub sandwich restaurant chain. They now have more than 34,000 restaurants around the world and continue to serve the best submarine sandwiches using only the freshest ingredients.
